6th GRADE

Greetings 6th grade parents and students! Welcome to Spanish class! On these pages you will find information about our class and tips and resources to help you succeed. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.

As an Exploratory, your child will have approximately 45 days of Spanish during one semester (90 days) of the school year...that's every other day for half the year. Each class period is 38 minutes.

Course Content

This language course focuses on the development of basic communicative competence in Spanish and an understanding of the cultures of the people who speak the language.

The major means of communication between students and myself will be in Spanish. Through consistent and comprehensible exposure to Spanish, students develop an "ear" for it, much like young children do when learning their first language. Research tells us that language acquisition happens more through listening and speaking, in real-life context, than through the study of grammar as was common practice in the past.

We will follow the ACTFL Standards of Foreign Language Learning: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities.  Achievement will be measured in these areas by the use of performance-based assessments.  These show us what the student can “do” using the language
